Like it or not, Christianity is embedded into popular culture, even if its influence is subtle and hidden. It’s not frequently that pastors and preachers are portrayed favorably in Hollywood television and film productions. In the case of Jesus Revolution, Frasier star Kelsey Grammer will portray Chuck Smith, founder of Calvary Chapel, the church from Orange County, California, that sparked a worldwide cultural movement.

Now in production and backed by Lionsgate, Jesus Revolution tells the story of the transformative movement of the 1970s, when millions of hippies turned to the faith. If the backing of the major studio doesn’t guarantee a blockbuster, consider that in addition to Grammer, the film features Jonathan Roumie as controversial hippy preacher Lonnie Frisbee. Roumie is best known for portraying Jesus Christ in the grass roots funded series The Chosen.

In this on set video posted by pastor Greg Laurie (he wrote the book the film is based on), Grammer tearfully explains why he accepted the role of Smith. As unusual as it is for members of the clergy to receive positive portrayals on the silver screen, it’s encouraging to see that Grammer has his heart in the role. As fascinating as the story of Calvary Chapel’s rise is, and as influential their mildly progressive brand of evangelism is, Jesus Revolution will be one to watch.
