Traversing through various analog and digital sets and environments on the video for ‘Only You,’ Cameron Lew of Ginger Root seeks meaning in media chaos. A VHS tape, apparently imbued with magical powers, launches our protagonist from scene to scene, ala Kurt Vonnegut’s Slaughterhouse-Five and possibly The Truman Show film starring Jim Carrey. A mysterious, guitar-wielding female seems to hold a clue to the paradoxical scenario.

The video boasts an authentic lo-fi aesthetic, and was created in Japan and the USA by two crews of about a dozen each, including Lew, and directed by Lew and David Gutel, and cinematography by Gutel and Taylor Leach. Lew is the singer/songwriter of Ginger Root, consisting of studio creations and live performances with friends from high school.

Ginger Root’s self-proclaimed genre is ‘Aggressive Elevator Soul,’ incorporating elements of funk, disco, lounge and pop. ‘Only You’ is the fifth single from the upcoming album SHINBANGUMI, due out on September 13 on Ghostly International. Starting in September, Ginger Root has a tour beginning in the U.S. and Canada, then moving on to Europe.
