By Keith Walsh
For this new semi-regular feature on popularculturebeat.com, I’ll share some of the newest sounds to come my way. There’s much to enjoy here, from psychedelia to punk, to Americana, and art rock.
Zachary Ross And The Divine “Push Start (Everyone Knows)”
Ross wears his heart on his sleeve on his new album, Rebuilding Heaven, and this latest single finds him in full on expressive mode, spitting verses while giving advice to his lover. Based in Philadelphia, and previously with Man Overboard, Ross is a reflective singer songwriter with a lot to say. Rebuilding Heaven is the first EP by Zachary Ross And The Divine, and is out now on Smartpunk Records.

Jessie Kilguss “Sleepwalking Heart”
This simmering ballad by New York City’s Jessie Kilguss sounds like a lament in the verses, only turning to affirmation in the chorus. The instrumentation is subdued and lovely, and Kilguss’ tender soprano tells a story in the great tradition of Americana. “Sleepwalking Heart” is both nostalgic and forward looking, and is from the upcoming album What Do Whales Dream About At Night? The single is inspired by the book The Sleepwalker’s Guide To Dancing by Mira Jacobs, and assembles an impressive cast of players, including Naren Rauch on guitar, Whynot Jansveld on bass guitar, Brian Griffin on drums. The single is co-produced by Adam Lasus and Charlie Nieland.

Elk City “That Someone”
This slice of art rock from New York is a delicious-sounding single with a catchy riff and buoyant vocals Renee LoBue. The drums keep a unique beat, thanks to LoBue’s musical partner and co-founder, Ray Ketchem. Simmering electric guitar by Sean Eden (Luna) and Chris Robertson, and bass by Richard Baluyut round out this sonic treat. “That Someone” is from the upcoming album Above The Water, captured at Ketchem’s Magic Door Recording.
A little velvet plane I could not reach A little out of touch Enough to break free How did I know to get so high When nobody ever tried to stop (me)

Black Nite Crash “The Take”
Awash in shimmering guitars and simmering beats, “The Take” by Seattle’s Black Night Crash sets a mood that sounds to me like a modern reimagining of The Doors, Echo and The Bunnymen, and other psychedelic bands. The sweet tune features vocals and guitars by Jim Beggs and Claire Tucker, James Stone also on guitar, Jason Hadaway on bass, and Tony Zuniga on drums and percussion. Sharim Johnson also contributes guitars, with Matt Brown on organ. It’s from the forthcoming album Washed In The Sound With Black Nite Crash, coming in October.

Sicky “The Bridge”
Britain’s Sicky presents a bouncy alternative pop track with some of the great features of psychedelia, such as keyboard flute sounds, fuzz guitar and fun vocals. The video features a walk around Britain through flower fields and architectural features, taking us with Sicky, who is “standing on the edge.” The artsy feel of the song and video are loaded with charm and inspiration. The album Garbage Town is due in October.
