Los Angeles-based singer/songwriter Julian Shah-Tayler has created a name for himself as a solo artist, as a member of Depeche Mode Tribute “Strangelove,” and as a spirited performer of David Bowie songs with his “Band That Fell To Earth.” He recently got the chance to create an imaginary Bowie song, in which Sarah from Labyrinth connects with Bowie’s Jareth from the film.
The song “At The End Of Time” was created when Arden Leigh of Arden And The Wolves approached Shah-Tayler about working together. As he explains: “Arden was seeking collaborations and has a lovely voice, so I offered to co-write with her, having seen her at my shows and having attended hers.”
Shah-Tayler says he was pleasantly surprised by the Labyrinthian twist of the lyrics. He says: “I had no idea which direction she would push the lyrics in, and when she came in with the fully realized lyric I was pleased with what she had done.” A studio whiz and electronic music guru, Shah-Tayler created the track, to which he and Leigh added vocals.
I asked Shah-Tayler if he thought that Jennifer Connelly’s Sarah would actually return to Bowie’s Jareth, as he was somewhat a villain in the film. “I think the question is really a Bowie question,” Shah-Tayler explained. “He was unmistakably a fascinating character on and off screen, so probably!”
The lovely video was produced by Aaron Mann.
Julian Shah-Tayler has a new album, titled Elysium, coming October 17.
