Music Video: George Harrison’s ‘My Sweet Lord’ Is A Metaphorical, Star-Studded Trip

George Harrison: All Things Must Pass, cover for 50th anniversary edition

By Keith Walsh
Perhaps the most popular song from former Beatle George Harrison, “My Sweet Lord” is presented in a new video created by George’s son Dhani, David Zonshine, and director Lance Bangs.

There are dozens of cameos, including Mark Hammill, Ringo Starr, Joe Walsh, ‘Weird’ Al Yankovic, Jon Hamm, Taika Waititi, Rosanna Arquette, Olivia Harrison, and so many others. A bureau agent played by Hammill, bearded like Luke Skywalker from the latest Disney Star Wars sequels, sends an agent played by Fred Armisen on a quest through recent media history that ends up at Los Angeles’ Vista Theatre (owned by Quentin Tarantino), where a video of the song from the early 70s plays. There’s lots of humorous action, intrigue, as well as metaphorical spiritual references.

Ironically, despite being an international number one hit by early 1971, many radio stations in the U.S. refused to spin the disc, due to the lyrical inclusion of several gods from the Indian Pantheon.

The song’s new mix, from the 50th Anniversary Edition of the LP All Things Must Pass (newly mixed by Paul Hicks) is crystal clear, and this is a song that never fails to bring the goosebumps in first place. Combined with the playful star-studded storyline, this new presentation of “My Sweet Lord” is a super-exciting, sentimental trip down memory lane that’s totally far out.
